Problem:  When attempting to connect to a VisionFS host with a valid username and password from Windows 2000 with, you get a dialog box:

\\<hostname> is not accessible.
You are not authorized to log in from this station.

Cause: A mixture of Windows 95, 98 and NT workstations were being served by VisionFS 3.1 using UNIX password authentication. Then a Windows 2000 Professional workstation was added, but this system cannot authenticate to the VisionFS using UNIX password authentication. It only works if the VisionFS server is switched to VisionFS password database authentication. This is not an acceptable workaround because it would involve editing the registry of all the older Windows clients.

Solution:

On the Windows 2000 Professional system:

Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->

Local Security Policy-> Security Setting tree->

Local Policies-> Security Options->

Change "Send unencrypted password to connect to third-party SMB servers" to "Enabled" and reboot the system.

Note

This workaround will not work if Service Pack 1 is installed because Microsoft introduced an extra byte at the beginning of the password which prevents authentication.
