Problem: You Cannot Apply Some Windows Update Packages to an Exchange 2000 Server.
SYMPTOMSWhen you apply Microsoft Windows 2000 fixes from the Windows Update site to a computer that is running Exchange 2000 Server, some of the fixes may not install. You may receive an error message that is similar to the following (where Qxxxxx is the number of the Microsoft Knowledge Base article that describes a fix, and date is the release date of a security update):
No Updates Were Installed
The following items failed to install. To try installing them again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now again.

Security Update, (date)
You may also receive the following error message:
Windows update.log file error:
Error 0x80070052: The directory or file cannot be created
Cause: This issue may occur if some of the fixes try to create or to find temporary folders on drive M of Exchange 2000 during installation.
Solution:
subst m: /d
If you remove the mapping to drive M, you do not damage Exchange 2000 in any way. You temporarily cannot view drive M in Microsoft Windows Explorer.
You have to restart Windows 2000 after you install Windows 2000 updates. After you restart Windows 2000, Exchange 2000 and drive M start without any issues.
