Problem: When attempting to run a Multi-User QuickBooks, with the data file on a server, you get an error the file is in use or QuickBooks cannot update to a new release due to a different version than users currently logged in.  However there are not any users currently using QuickBooks.

Cause: The server has set the file as still open from a previous improper termination of QuickBooks

Solution:  

Ensure all users are logged out of QuickBooks.

Log into the server and force the closure of the file.

From Windows 2000 server:

1. Right click "My Computer" and select "Manage".
2. Expand "Computer Management (Local).
3. Expand "Shared Folders.
4. Double Click "Open Files".
5. Right Click each of the files related to the QuickBooks data file and choose "Close open File".
