Problem: With Windows 98, or Windows 95 installed with the Microsoft encrypted password patch SECUPD.EXE, SECUPD2.EXE or NWREDUP4.EXE, when trying to connect try to connect to a VisionFS share with a valid username the following error message occurs:
Password Incorrect: Make sure that you have typed it correctly
Cause: The SMB protocol can transfer the authentication in two ways: plain (unencrypted) or encrypted. By default, the VisionFS server uses plain text passwords.
Windows98 by default uses encrypted passwords. After installing the Microsoft encrypted
password patches listed above, Windows 95 allows authentication only using encrypted
passwords.
How can I tell if these patches are installed on my Windows?

Solution:
To resolve this problem, re-enable the use of plain text passwords in Windows 95
or 98 by editing the Windows registry:
Start > Run > "regedit"
-
WARNING: Using the registry editor incorrectly can cause serious,
system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows.
Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the
use of the registry editor can be solved. Use this tool at your
own risk. It's recommended that you back up your Windows registry
before editing, as well as having a Windows boot disk. See the
Microsoft Windows documentation for information on creating a boot
disk and backing up your registry to disk.
Once in regedit, go to the following key in the Windows registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP]
-
With this key open, go to the menu and select:
Edit/New.../DWORD Value
-
This will create an icon in the right hand pane of the registry
below the "Default Value". Name this entry as:
EnablePlainTextPassword
-
Highlight this entry and select "Edit/Modify". In the "Value Data"
field, type the number "1". Click OK and exit the registry editor
program.
Reboot the Windows box. Access to VisionFS shares should be
restored.
